THE BASICS - MARCHING FUNDAMENTALS Think back to when you were first learning marching fundamentals If taught in a confusing way, this activity can seem very foreign and new to young people Have an organized way of presenting the basics of Marching and Maneuvering

Commands Re-thinking the Marching Band Posture All about ease of playing! Music is the main thing! Does your posture allow for good air intake. Air!!!!!! Review Stationary Commands Review Moving Commands See Handout for details

First Things First… Establish BLOCKS! You will need a Warm- Up Block to teach fundamentals You will need a demonstration circle You will need a Parade Block (march to and from practice field? How and when will they get to these blocks? Set times? Whistle Commands? Establish this in your warm-up system!

Terminology Know the lingo and Terminology Make sure the students know what you are talking about too… System + Spirit!

A System for Teaching Drill Just know that every band learns differently Think about where you would like to put drill teaching within the rehearsal Marry the Music with the Feet! Drill must make phrase sense to be good drill!

My Drill Teaching System Find yourself in Set ( ) Attention, Dress - Left, Right (adjust), Center Look at Set ( ) without talking. Point to your new spot. Quickly and Quietly find yourself in the new set

Teaching Drill Attention, Dress Back up to the previous set Give instructions, have band repeat March it twice (maybe rewind) Back in previous set - Give music instructions Play in place March and play twice (dressing when needed) Put in context from first set - march and play

Basics from the Bottom Up Fall - In : Establish a system for setting the band, getting them organized, and falling into attention or parade rest in their fundie block. A whistle command perhaps? Fall In Command? Right Foot in place, No talking, a chance for staff or leadership to take attendance.
