Recognizing Linear Relationships and Solving Equations Using Excel to Chart and Graph Patterns iLearn Grade 7 Mathematics Session 7.3
2
Focusing Questions How can an Excel chart and graph help organize data? How can using Excel within Word help keep explanations, tables, and graphs organized in one place?

Framing The Session We have previously worked with virtual manipulatives to develop and visualize patterns of linear relationships. We saw the various ways the SmartBoard can demonstrate pattern building. Today we will focus on creating an Excel spreadsheet/chart and graph within Word to help organize information.
5
Teaching We will set up an Excel worksheet/chart and graph within Microsoft Word. We will go through the steps following “Making an Excel Chart and Graph.” We will follow the directions in IMPACT Math, Problem Set B and D (pages 346 and 349).
6
Guided Practice You will now create an Excel chart for Problem Set B. You will then create an Excel graph for Problem Set D.

Work Time
8
Getting Started Use Excel to help you organize your data for the Z-shape pattern. Create a scatterplot from your Table of Values. Explore different applications of Excel. Explain your work.
9
Work Time Continue working on the Excel chart within Word for Problem Set B. Create an Excel graph (scatterplot) for Problem Set D using the table of values from Problem Set B. Refer to “Make an Excel Chart and Graph” handout. Explore various uses for Excel.
