ICT resources for maths and science teachers Workshop 6: Using charts
2
Refresh your memory Previous workshop Using drawing tools. Have you used drawing tools in new contexts? Do you have anything to share?
3
Experience People are wise in proportion, not to their experience, but to their capacity for experience. * George Bernard ShawGeorge Bernard Shaw
4
Activity 1: Linear graphs Work in pairs. 30 min Produce a linear graph to suit your own needs as a teacher.
5
Activity 2: Challenge – quadratic equations Work in pairs. 45 min Use any quadratic equation y = ax 2 + bx + c Show in graphical format the effect of changing: a - the coefficient of x 2 c - the y intercept Draw at least three graphs for each case.
6
Activity 3: Reflection and sharing Work in large groups. 45 min How can access to Microsoft Excel help you design a lesson for learners to generate the conclusions about the effect of changing the y intercept and the coefficient of x 2 in any quadratic equation? What other ideas do you have for using Excel in learning situations?
7
Between workshops Experiment with graphs and mathematical expressions. Explore the use of charts with learners, as discussed during the workshop.
