This is a power-point on volcanoes. By Eve-Marie Cook
2
Contents What is a volcano? How do they work? Where are there volcanoes ? How many people have died?
3
A volcano is a mountain or hill, typically cone shaped, having a crater or vent where lava, rock fragments, hot vapour, and gas are or have been erupted from the earth's crust.
4
The Earth's crust is made up of huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. These plates sometimes move. The friction causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions near the edges of the plates. The theory that explains this process is called plate tectonics.
5
Where are there volcanoes? The red dots represent volcanoes. As you can see most volcanoes are along the coastline or in the sea.
6
About 200,000 have lost their lives by volcanic eruptions over the last 500 years. One devastating eruption was in the Carrabin where about 30,000 people died.
