1 An International Conference that Examines the Issues of Yesterday, the Challenges of Today, and the Opportunities for Tomorrow Research and Development on Energy Production Summary/Background Areas of Emphasis: —Status of technologies in key areas. —Mechanisms for technology utilization. —Future of energy and the enabling technologies. Participating Institutions: —China University of Mining and Technology —Texas A&M University —Prairie View A&M University —ChevronTexaco —Anadarko Petroleum Corporation —Knowledge Deployment/Verdisys (Technology) —DeGolyer and MacNaughton (Consulting)

2 An International Conference that Examines the Issues of Yesterday, the Challenges of Today, and the Opportunities for Tomorrow Research and Development on Energy Production Research Themes Status of technologies in key areas: —Maintenance/expansion of oil and gas reserves.  World oil reserves continue to grow at  1-2 percent/year.  World gas reserves growing at > 2 percent/year.  World oil consumption flat (economy?).  World gas consumption is rising at  2 percent/year. —Coal utilization:  Production Rank: China, U.S., Fmr. Soviet, Germany, India. —Unconventional Gas Resources:  Coalbed Methane (Est. U.S.  400-800 tcf).  Coalmine Methane (Est U.S.  400 tcf, Est. China  1000 tcf).  Low Permeability Gas Reservoirs (Est. U.S. > 5000 tcf). —Age of gas is upon us...  Methane (natural gas) utilization steadily increasing.  The big question... HYDROGEN! When? How? Where First?
