7. How do Refracting Telescopes work? The refractor uses a convex lens to collect and bend (or refract) light to the focal point, much like a pair of binoculars. (Like a concave mirror, the convex lens has the distinct characteristic of focusing light to a particular point.) The light is focused to the point of the eyepiece, where it encounters another set of lenses and is focused directly to your eye.
