1 Translating into Algebraic expressions
What words mean what?

2 Why do we need to know this?
Sometimes you are given the words to solve a problem and you have to “translate” into math. In Language B you translate: Can you say: What is your name? (French/Spanish)

3 Translating: Addition
Plus Add Sum More than Increased by Can you think of others?

4 Example: n + 5 a number plus 5 add 5 to a number
The sum of a number and 5 5 more than a number A number increased by 5

5 Translating: Subtraction
Minus Subtract Difference Less than Decreased by

6 Difference of a number and 11
Example: x - 11 A number minus 11 Subtract 11 from a number Difference of a number and 11 11 less than a number A number decreased by 11

7 Translating: Multiply
Times Multiplied Product Double Triple Twice

8 Example: 3m 3 times a number 3 multiplied by a number
The product of 3 and a number Triple a number

9 Translate: Division A number divided by 7 7 divided into a number
The quotient of a number and 7

10 Translate: Distributive
Three times the sum of a number and six 3(x + 3) Five times the difference of a number and ten 5(x – 10) The word quantity might also be used Six times a quantity of a number plus two 6(x + 2)

11 Reflection How many other words can you think of that could be used in a word problem? Add any additional words to your lists.
