1
Warm-up Solve the following absolute value equation l 2x + 4 l = 24
2
6.4 absolute value & inequalities When you solve absolute value equations, you get 2 answers – a positive & a negative answer When you combine absolute values w/inequalities, you also have 2 answers that you’ll find by using compound inequalities
3
2 different types of absolute value inequalities 1)< & < absolute value inequalities are “AND” compound inequalities l ax + b l < c to remove the absolute value signs, it must be set up as an “AND” inequality when the statement contains a < or < sign -c < ax + b < c
4
> & > absolute value inequalities are “OR” compound inequalities l ax + b l > c To remove absolute value signs, set up as an “or” statement ax + b > c OR ax + b < -c Sign flipped negative
5
“less than” absolute value inequality l x – 4 l < 3 -3 < x – 4 < 3 Solve for x 1 < x < 7 graph
6
“greater than” absolute value inequality l x + 1 l > 2 Make 2 separate statements X + 1 > 2 OR x + 1 < -2 X > 1 OR x < -3 graph
7
Try these 1.l x+ 9 l > 13 2.l 3x – 15 l < 12
9
Homework out – check odds w/book, evens w/friend questions?`
