Beliefs About Writing Writing proficiency begins with learning the basics and then building on them? People are born writers- you either can or can not write well? To develop as a writer you must develop good reading skills? The more a writer writes, the more he/she will improve?

Beliefs About Writing Unlearn unhelpful beliefs Writing is a process that involves: “all at once ness” Writing should start with questions, not answers (make the familiar strange) When writing one should suspend judgment (often judge to soon/too harshly) Writing situation (rhetorical choice): writer, subject, and reader

Writing as a Process What is your process? Linear- pre-write, write, rewrite Recursive- pre-writing, drafting, rewriting, pre-writing, drafting, rewriting (On-going process) Dialectical Thinking- recursive writing process shifts from two modes of thought- creative thinking to critical thinking (pg. 32)
