Energyscape a Blueprint for New Zealand’s Energy Research Andrew Campbell CRL Energy 17 July 2007

What will New Zealand’s energy system look like by 2030 or 2050? How could we best use our indigenous energy resources? How could New Zealand best prepare for this? Where should we focus our research effort?

 The Foundation Research Science and Technology Energy Projects Hydrogen Economy Bioenergy Options Energyscape … to a consortium of CRL Energy, IRL, Scion, GNS, NIWA and associates

Overall Linked Project (lead by NIWA) Resource maps and related constraints: Climate-driven (wind, hydro, etc.) Earth (coal, oil, gas, etc) Bioenergy (lead by Scion) Constraints Infrastructure maps: Current Potential Imported energy use Hydrogen (lead by CRL) Constraints Demand maps (lead by CRL): Current Forecast

Project Outputs: 1. Multiple spatial maps: Resource and constraints  gaps Infrastructure and constraints Demand 2. Single energy pathway calculations: Energy Economic Emissions  gaps in infrastructure 3. Future scenario, multi-pathway analysis: Development of analysis framework.   identify NZ’s possible future EnergyScape   further gaps   research plan to get us there “Climate- Driven” “Earth” Bioenergy Imports Residential Commercial Industry Transport Exports Resources Demand Infrastructure 4. Stakeholder and public “outreach”

Future Scenarios Used to test limits … what breaks and why? For example: All vehicles biofuelled by 2050. 100% renewable energy system by 2050. All light vehicles fuelled by ethanol by 2030. CCS.  Identify where the risks are,  and how research may reduce these risks.  An integrated research plan for New Zealand.

Who Carries Out the Research? “Mainstream” and likely to come from overseas. New Zealand-specific (e.g., climate, land use- related, etc.). Mainstream but a business case for New Zealand research. … where do the Universities fit within this? fit within this?

Stakeholder Introduction Meeting Wellington 9 th August 2007 12:30-2:15pm, at the Intercontinental Registrations: c.gazo@crl.co.nz

Timetable … Stage 1: Provision of Situation Analysis Resources and issues maps.
