How God Spoke to the Prophets How God Spoke through the Prophets Moses:—“Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.” (Ex. 24:4). I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him” (Deut. 18:18). Isaiah:—“Take for yourself a large tablet and write” (Isa. 8:1). Peter: “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). Paul: “…you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thes. 2:13).
21
The Process of Inspiration The Fact: The Bible is co-authored: God is the primary author God is the primary author Men of God are the secondary authors. Men of God are the secondary authors. The Means: What it is not—It is not verbal dictation (Different styles, vocabularies, and interests are reflected). What it is not—It is not verbal dictation (Different styles, vocabularies, and interests are reflected). What it is—Providential guidance “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved [driven, carried along] by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). What it is—Providential guidance “For prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved [driven, carried along] by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). The Prophetic Model: 1. Not merely a prompter (of ideas); 2. Not a secretary (receiving dictation of words); 2. Not a secretary (receiving dictation of words); 3. But like a teacher (implanting the exact meaning) and a co-author of a book (concurring in the written expression of it). 3. But like a teacher (implanting the exact meaning) and a co-author of a book (concurring in the written expression of it).

2. The Written Word of God Ex. 24:4.—“Moses wrote down all the words of the Lord.” Jer. 26:2.– Do “not omit a word.” 2 Tim. 3:16.—“All Scripture [writing] is given by inspiration of God….” John 5:39.—“You search the Scriptures…and they speak of Me.” John 10:35.—“The Scripture cannot be broken.” 1 Cor. 2:13.—“words…taught by the Holy Spirit.” Matt. 4:4, 7, 10.—“It is written…” (92x). Lk. 24:27.—“He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Rev. 22:18.—Do not add to “the words of the book of this prophecy.”

A. The Source of Inspiration B. The Means of Inspiration C. The Nature of Inspiration D. The Result of Inspiration
29
1.It is divinely authoritative (Mt. 4:4, 7, 10). 2.It is imperishable (Mt. 5:17-18). 3.It is infallible (Jn. 10:35). 4.It is historically reliable (Mt. 12:40; Mt. 24:37). Mt. 24:37). 5. It is scientifically accurate (Mt. 19:4-5). 6. It has ultimate supremacy (Mt. 15:3, 6). 7. It is inerrant (without error) (Mt. 22:29). D. The Result of Inspiration
30
1. It is Divinely Authoritative Jesus said : “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’... It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.…’ Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only’” (Mt. 4:4, 7, 10).
31
2. It is imperishable Matthew 5:17-18:“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”
32
3. It is infallible “If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken….” (John 10:35)
33
4. It is historically reliable Matthew 12:40: “For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.” Matthew 24:37-38: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark.”

5. It is scientifically accurate Matthew 19:4-5: “`Haven’t you read,’ he replied, ‘that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’”
37
6. It has ultimate supremacy Matthew 15:3, 6: “Jesus replied, ‘And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?.... Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.’”
38
7. It is inerrant (without error) Jesus replied : “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God” (Matt. 22:29). “Thy Word is truth” (Jn. 17:17).
39
Why The Bible Cannot Error 1. The Bible is the Word of God. 2. God Cannot Err. 3. Therefore, the Bible Cannot Err.
40
1. The Bible is the Word of God. "If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken" (Jn. 10:34-35). "If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken" (Jn. 10:34-35). “Laying aside the traditions of men…, making the word of God of no effect through your traditions” (Mk. 7:8, 13). “Laying aside the traditions of men…, making the word of God of no effect through your traditions” (Mk. 7:8, 13). “The Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God” (Rom. 3:2). “The Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God” (Rom. 3:2). “Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect” (Rom. 9:6). “Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect” (Rom. 9:6). “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt. 4:4). “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt. 4:4). "All scripture is given by inspiration of God…" (2 Tim. 3:16). "All scripture is given by inspiration of God…" (2 Tim. 3:16).
41
2. God Cannot Err. “Your Word is truth." (Jn. 17:17) "The sum of your word is truth.” (Psa. 119:160) "Let God be true…." (Rom. 3:4) "Let God be true…." (Rom. 3:4) "The God who cannot lie.” (Titus 1:2) "The God who cannot lie.” (Titus 1:2) "It is impossible for God to lie." (Heb. 6:18) "It is impossible for God to lie." (Heb. 6:18)
42
Why The Bible Cannot Error 1. The Bible is the Word of God. 2. God Cannot Err. 3. Therefore, the Bible Cannot Err.
43
A Bad Argument: 1. The Bible is the words of human beings. 2. Human beings err. 3. Therefore, the Bible errs. 1. The Bible is the words of human beings. 2. Human beings err. 3. Therefore, the Bible errs.
44
The Bad Premise: 1. The Bible is the words of human beings. 2. Human beings err. 3. Therefore, the Bible errs. 1. The Bible is the words of human beings. 2. Human beings err. 3. Therefore, the Bible errs.
45
The Error: Human beings do not always err. Human beings do not always err. And… And… Human beings did not err when moved by God who cannot err (2 Peter 1:20- 21). Human beings did not err when moved by God who cannot err (2 Peter 1:20- 21). “God can draw a straight line with a crooked stick.” “God can draw a straight line with a crooked stick.” Human beings do not always err. Human beings do not always err. And… And… Human beings did not err when moved by God who cannot err (2 Peter 1:20- 21). Human beings did not err when moved by God who cannot err (2 Peter 1:20- 21). “God can draw a straight line with a crooked stick.” “God can draw a straight line with a crooked stick.”
46
Jesus said: "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (Jn. 14:26) Men Never Err when the Spirit of Truth Speaks Through Them
47
Jesus said: "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (Jn. 14:26) Peter said: "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:21) Men Never Err when the Spirit of Truth Speaks Through Them
48
A Good Analogy: Divine Nature Divine Nature Human Nature Human Nature One in Person One in Propositions Without Sin Without Error The Living Word The Written Word (Savior) (Scripture) (Savior) (Scripture)

St. Augustine's Dictum: “If we are perplexed by any apparent contradiction in Scripture, it is not allowable to say, The author of this book is mistaken; but either [1] the manuscript is faulty, or [2] the translation is wrong, or [3] you have not understood.” (Augustine, Reply to Faustus 11.5) “If we are perplexed by any apparent contradiction in Scripture, it is not allowable to say, The author of this book is mistaken; but either [1] the manuscript is faulty, or [2] the translation is wrong, or [3] you have not understood.” (Augustine, Reply to Faustus 11.5)
52
Inspiration of the Bible A. The Source—God B. The Means—Men of God C. The Nature—Words from God D. The Result—Infallible truth of God of God
53
The Conclusion: The Conclusion: I.Uniqueness of Its Composition: The Bible is a co-authored book. The Bible is a co-authored book. a. God is the primary author; a. God is the primary author; b. Men of God were the secondary authors. b. Men of God were the secondary authors. c. The result is that one and the same set of words are both God’s and man’s. c. The result is that one and the same set of words are both God’s and man’s. So, whatever God said in Scripture, the human author said. And whatever the human author said in Scripture, God said. So, whatever God said in Scripture, the human author said. And whatever the human author said in Scripture, God said.
54
The Implications “What God has joined, let not man put asunder.”“What God has joined, let not man put asunder.” 1. Whatever the Bible says, God says.1. Whatever the Bible says, God says. 2. Knowing the Scripture is knowing the mind of God on the matter.2. Knowing the Scripture is knowing the mind of God on the matter. 3. Once we know what the Bible says, we should never ask: “Hath God said?”3. Once we know what the Bible says, we should never ask: “Hath God said?”
