First Impressions The job application is designed to help the manager spot your strengths and weaknesses quickly. It’s a snapshot of who you are – HOW DO YOU WANT IT TO RESPRESENT YOU???
5
Tips Print Use a pen Be neat Answer EVERY question. Put n/a if it is not applicable Don’t give an expected salary. Write “open” or “flexible”. Be accurate Have a good reason for leaving your jobs Get permission from people you will use as references Be HONEST Sign and date application
6
Illegal Information to ignore on a job application Height, weight Age, sex Marital status Size of your family Religion, politics Birthplace Race or national origin Handicaps Arrests or convictions Military discharge
7
Exceptions An employer may ask you an off-limits question if that topic has to do with your ability to do the job. Lifting requirements: physical handicaps can be asked about
8
But, I have never had a job List skills or classes that are relevant List volunteer work, self employment (babysitting), or charitable work Help you have provided (watched the neighbors dog, help your Mom at her office, etc.)
9
Let’s try it… Fill out the provided application with your given work history Complete on your own Turn in when completed
10
Now that I have submitted an application… Follow-up If it’s an online application, call to be sure it’s been received Don’t call or stop in everyday A couple times is customary Be professional, courteous and polite! It will make them look for your application
11
You got an interview! Now what? Research the company (mission statement, sales, news, etc.) Research the specific job you are applying for (tasks, responsibilities, skills, etc.)
12
Uh oh! You lost your job! What is being laid off? What happens if you are fired? How are you going to pay your bills? Who can get unemployment? How much do you get? $54.00 per week to $378.00
