Warm Up – September 30, 2015 4th Period – Get out a sheet of paper and label it K-W-L. Under the K, write two things you ‘know’ about the Byzantines. Under the W, write two things you ‘want’ to know. At the end of class, under the L, you will write two things you learned today. 5th Period – Pick up the six pages at the side of the room. Look over them and begin reading. We will begin when the bell rings.

Document A Why should we study the Byzantines?
The background essay shows that the Byzantines controlled territory between Western Europe and the Middle East. They were a buffer between Christianity and Islam. Had the Byzantine Empire fallen to the Arabs in the 7th century, Islam might have overtaken not only the Eastern Orthodox Church, but the Latin Catholic Church as well. Because the consequences of a Muslim advance were potentially so great, this is a good reason to study the Byzantines.

Document B Why were the walls of Constantinople built?
To keep out the Huns and the Goths Why was it so difficult for an attacking enemy to break through? Three walls. Walls were 25 feet thick. Moat was 60 feet towers. Towers had archers and missile throwers. Why couldn’t an enemy attack on the seaward side of the city? The seaward side was protected by a wall and the fleet.
