1. John Paul II – the Pope

2. His real name was Karol Wojtyla and he was born in Wadowice on May 18th, 1920.

3. His brother He had a brother called Edmund who was a doctor in Cracow.

4. He became a priest in Cracow on 1st November 1946 and twenty-one years later, in 1967, he became a cardinal.

5. In 1978, Wojtyla was elected Pope and took the name John Paul II.

6. On May 13, 1981, in Rome, Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali Agca tried to kill the Pope, but he failed.

7. John Paul II died on April 2, 2005 in the Vatican City.
