Do you know what organelles are? Well, we have organs… cells have organelles. We have a heart, lungs, and kidneys; they have a nucleus, mitochondria.. blah blah blah! Got it? Good!
3
Do you know all of the names and functions of all of the organelles? Yeah.. me neither. =) The good news is … you don’t have to know them all! Woo Hoo You DO have to know a few important ones. Let’s see…
4
FIRST…LET’S LOOK AT THE CELL…. Now, let’s remove the confusing stuff first. Yesssssss….. Much Better =)
5
The ones you have to know are… 1) Nucleus 2) Cell membrane 3) Mitochondria 4) Chloroplast 5) Cell wall Sound familiar? At least a little bit? On the next slide, find them on the picture!!
6
1) Nucleus 2) Cell membrane 3) Mitochondria 4) Chloroplast 5) Cell wall
7
Where are the chloroplasts and cell wall???? YUP… you’re right. You only find those in plant cells. THIS is an animal cell.
8
THIS is a plant cell This is a chloroplast The cell wall is the THICK layer outside of the cell membrane.
9
Usually, a plant cell is RECTANGULAR… LIKE THIS
10
So there ARE some differences between plant and animal cells. Why type of cells have cell walls? Plant Cells What type of cells are sometimes drawn to look rectangular? Plant Cells
11
More differences…. Why type of cells have a nucleus? THEY BOTH DO!! This is where both plants and animals carry their DNA!!!! This is why PLANTS (NOT ANIMALS) can make their own food!!!!!! What type of cells have chloroplasts? Plant Cells
12
Let’s focus in on the … They’re green! This is why plants are green! You See??
13
Chloroplasts This is where plants MAKE their own food. They can make enchiladas, tacos, and sometimes quesadillas whenever they want. This is where plants MAKE their own food. They can make enchiladas, tacos, and sometimes quesadillas whenever they want. Ha whatever. All that they can make is glucose sugar through a process called…? Umm… this is where you tell me the answer. At least guess!
14
Photosynthesis!!!!!!! Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy Teacher! Would you give the kids at least one full minute to look over the picture! Gosh…Some teachers are so unbelievable… ha =)
15
Okay… so what goes in and out of plants in photosynthesis?? WHAT? YOU FORGOT? LOOK AT IT AGAIN!!!
16
Photosynthesis!!!!!!! Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy You’ll remember it now right??
17
Okay…so what goes in and out of plants in photosynthesis?? CO 2 + H 2 0 + ENERGY C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 Ready for the answer?? You need another look? Too bad. =)
18
So what about… NOT GREEN
19
Mmmm… if photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts, what process occurs in mitochondria? Once again, I’m waiting for some kind of answer. Ready for the answer?
20
Cellular Respiration Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy We use the food that we eat (sugar) to give us energy! Without this energy, we would die =) (If you don’t eat, you starve to death… duh). For some reason, this looks familiar…
21
Ummm…. Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy
22
Cellular Respiration Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy Mmmmmm…..
23
Ahhhhh…. Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy
24
Cellular Respiration Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy Brain cells kicking in yet??
25
Yeah buddy… Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy
26
Cellular Respiration Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy Yeah! It’s the exact opposite of photosynthesis! So you think you can remember what goes in and out? Study for a second… =)
27
So what goes in and out of mitochondria during cellular respiration? Yeah yeah… just one more look..
28
Cellular Respiration Carbon Dioxide Water Oxygen Sugar Energy
29
Okay!! Tell me what I want to hear!!! What comes in and out of mitochondria during cellular respiration?
30
Okay ready?? Since photosynthesis in the chloroplasts looks like this… CO 2 + H 2 0 + ENERGY C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 Cellular respiration in the mitochondria looks like … GUESS!! C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 0 + ENERGY TOO EASY!!!!!!!
31
Key Points to Discuss for a Second In Class Before The Small Quiz -How are plant and animal cells different? -What does the nucleus have inside of it? -What process occurs in mitochondria? How about in chloroplasts? -What do plant cells have that they use to make their own food?

Thank you very much! This has been a Mr. Mireles Production. Good luck on the quiz.
