FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT “KINDNESS”

Galatians 5:22, 23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. relationships But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Defining “Kindness” –Arndt & Gingrich 1 “goodness, uprightness” 2 “goodness, kindness, generosity” –Vine’s - “It signifies ‘not merely’ goodness as a quality, rather it is goodness in action, goodness expressing itself in deeds; yet not goodness expressing itself in indignation against sin, for it is contrasted with severity in Rom. 11:22, but in grace and tenderness and compassion”

Romans 11:22 “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in goodness, otherwise you also will be cut off.”

“Consider the goodness of God” Psalm 107 To the Redeemed (vv. 1-9) Psalms 107:2, 8 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; 8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

“Consider the goodness of God” Psalm 107 To the Chastised (vv. 10-16) Psalms 107:14-15 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. 15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

“Consider the goodness of God” Psalm 107 To the Foolish In Sin (vv. 17-22) Psalms 107:17, 21 17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. 21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

“Consider the goodness of God” Psalm 107 To the Seamen in Peril (vv. 23-32) Psalms 107:23, 28, 31 23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; 28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he brings them out of their distresses. 31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

“Consider the goodness of God” Psalm 107 To the Downtrodden (vv. 33-43) Psalms 107:36, 43 36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation; 43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the goodness of the Lord.

“Consider the goodness of God” Psalm 107 To the Redeemed (vv. 1-9) To the Chastised (vv. 10-16) To the Foolish In Sin (vv. 17-22) To the Seamen in Peril (vv. 23-32) To the Downtrodden (vv. 33-43) Romans 2:4 “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

God’s Kindness Is Available to All (even the wicked) Luke 6:35-36 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. “Consider the goodness of God”

God’s Kindness Is Available to All (through sending His Son) Titus 3:4-6 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; “Consider the goodness of God”

God Calls Us To Kindness We are challenged to be “kind” to all (to the ungrateful and evil) Luke 6:35-36 35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

God Calls Us To Kindness We are challenged to be “kind” to all (to our brethren) Colossians 3:12-13 12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Kindness Questions Is my first response to others clothed in kindness? Are others “at ease” in my presence or “on edge?” Do I find myself acting different to different people? Am I rude on one occasion, then kind on others

Being Kind Doesn’t mean that we tolerate sin –Jesus was kind and compassionate, yet called men out of sin Doesn’t mean that we cannot be forceful and bold –Jesus was kind and compassionate, yet forceful and bold

Being Kind Should make us sensitive to another’s need (Jas. 2:14-18)

Being Kind James 2:14-18 14 What does it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, 16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what dose it profit?

Being Kind James 2:14-18 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.

Being Kind Should make us treat everyone the way we want to be treated (Jas. 2:1-13)

Being Kind James 2:1-13 1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. 2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3 And ye have respect to him that wears the good clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

Being Kind James 2:1-13 4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? 5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? 6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

Being Kind James 2:1-13 7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called? 8 If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Being Kind James 2:1-13 11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. 12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. 13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath showed no mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgment.

Being Kind Should make us sensitive to another’s need Should make us treat everyone the way we want to be treated Should make us deal with others the way God deals with us

Being Kind This Christian kindness is a lovely thing, and its loveliness comes from the fact that Christian kindness means treating others in the way in which God has treated us.” (Barclay)
