2 What are the topics? The Body: Growth and Development Strategies for Healthy Living Values and Practices for Healthy Living Strategies for Positive Personal Development and Healthy Relationships

3 What is this course about?  setting personal goals for attaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle  analysing influences on eating habits, including family, peers, and media  identifying factors that influence healthy sexual decision making  identifying school and community sources of information and support for individuals in unhealthy, abusive, or exploitative relationships (e.g., school counsellor, help line)

4  assessing the importance of healthy relationships (e.g., with friends, family, teachers, mentors) influences related to substance misuse (e.g., friends, family, media)  analysing influences related to substance misuse (e.g., friends, family, media)  exploring strategies that can assist youth in making healthy choices related to substance use (e.g., assertive communication, refusal/delay/ negotiation skills, avoidance of risk situations, participating in alternative activities) What is this course about?

5 How will your grade be made up?  Stop-n-Drop a Note: Whenever you hear this you must stop what you are doing and write down in note form your thoughts, frame of mind, a “snap-shot” of what you are doing or have done.  Follow Along: Some classes you will have a “follow along” sheet, you will be responsible for completing the information on the sheet.  Entrance/Exit Slips: There will be times when you have to either complete a small-short-quick task card before or after class  Portfolio: This is a folder that will keep all of your completed work. You will be given another folder for your work in progress. *Additional assessment & evaluation tools may be used throughout the term

6 How will your grade be made up?  Reflections: Occasionally you will be asked to reflect on what we have discussed in class, you will be given a topic to reflect on. This task is meant to be an individual reflection. You are more than welcome to use your portfolio to help you  Quizzes: You will be asked to complete a number of quizzes throughout our topics.

7 How will your grade be made up?  Curriculum Outcomes: Embedded in the lessons, assessments, evaluations, and class activities are outcomes. These outcomes are guidelines and frameworks for what is expected to be learned throughout the year.  Observational Assessments: This is one of the most effective ways to make sure learning is occurring. Each class I will be observing you and assessing you in the following areas:1) Attention to task & 2) Citizenship: “Positive Contributor to class”. This means that you consistently display respect to everyone. Each class you will be given specific things to do. It is your responsibility as a student to adhere to and follow along with teacher and peer expectations.

10 Homework  You will have homework throughout the term  It is your responsibility to complete all homework assignments  A homework log will be kept  Homework is not meant to take up all of your time outside of school. Homework assignments are meant to connect home with school. Also a great way to keep parents/guardians informed with class progress.

11 Activity #1: “Keep A Secret”  On the piece of paper provided answer and complete all of the tasks  Be sure to write your name and seal the envelope  This can go into your portfolio

12 Activity #1: “Keep A Secret” 1. What do you think this course is about? 2. What would you like to learn from this course? 3. How important is it to you that you are a positive contributor to class and society? Rate the importance using a 1-5 scale (5 being of most importance). Explain why?

13 Assignment #1: Portfolio What to do?  Create and design a portfolio that will represent you!  Take your time and be creative What will go in it?  This is where all of your completed work will go.  Small folder for “Work In Progress”.  Anything that you feel represents your learning in class.  Any and all pieces of work that you are proud of, or think is your best work. When is it due?  A.S.A.P! (As Soon As Possible)

14 Let’s Talk About: Life Skills  In groups or pairs discuss what you feel life skills are. Write them down. Why do you feel this way?  As a whole group let’s talk about it  Read the following

15 a) Critical thinking skills/Decision-making skills: include decision making/ problem solving skills and information gathering skills. The individual must also be skilled at evaluating the future consequences of their present actions and the actions of others. They need to be able to determine alternative solutions and to analyze the influence of their own values and the values of those around them. b) Interpersonal/Communication skills: include verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to express feelings and give feed back. Also in this category, are negotiation/refusal skills and assertiveness skills that directly affect ones’ ability to manage conflict. Empathy, which is the ability to listen and understand others’ needs, is also a key interpersonal skill. Teamwork and the ability to cooperate include expressing respect for those around us. Development of this skill set enables the adolescent to be accepted in society. These skills result in the acceptance of social norms that provide the foundation for adult social behaviour. c) Coping and self-management skills: refers to skills to increase the internal locus of control, so that the individual believes that they can make a difference in the world and affect change. Self esteem, self-awareness, self-evaluation skills and the ability to set goals are also part of the more general category of self-management skills. Anger, grief and anxiety must all be dealt with, and the individual learns to cope loss or trauma. Stress and time management are key, as are positive thinking and relaxation techniques.

16 Let’s Talk About: Life Skills Other Life Skill Strategies: UNICEF, UNESCO and WHO list the ten core life skill strategies and techniques as:  problem solving, critical thinking, effective communication skills,  decision-making, creative thinking, interpersonal relationship skills, self awareness,  building skills, empathy, and coping with stress and emotions.

19 Homework Research your own definitions of the following:  Empathy  Self-awareness  Self-esteem  Self-confidence Be sure:  Not to copy word-word from your research.  To create your own definitions.  Give one example of each.
