2 Presentation Objectives MYP Overview Rationale for adding the Middle Years Programme at Dickinson Approval Process – We are proposing to begin the program in August 2015 Student Selection Logistics

4 MYP Basics The MYP is a whole-school program for grades 6 through 10 The MYP at Dickinson will begin as a selective enrollment magnet program for 50 students in grades 6 through 8 (150 total) The MYP requires the study of at least two languages (language of instruction and additional language of choice) to support students in understanding their own cultures and those of others Our students will study English and Either French or Spanish The MYP empowers students to participate in service within the community

6 Rationale and IB 101 IB offers students an excellent curriculum and approach to teaching and learning The MYP will support and foster the growth and the diversity of the DP already in place We have the space to create a “school-within-a-school” that will isolate MYP students from older high school students We have created a student selection process that we hope will make the MYP accessible to a variety of students from all parts of the district

7 Approval Process 1. Feasibility study (6 months) – Complete 2. Head of School MYP Training – April 2014 – Complete 3. Submit “Intent to Apply” (Part A) – Planned for 11/1/2014 4. Become an Authorized Candidate School – Once authorized as a Candidate School you may begin teaching the programme 5. Hiring and Facilities – Spring 2015 6. Trial Implementation & Training – 2015-2016 School Year

8 Approval Process (continued) 7. Submit “Application for Authorization” (Part B) – January / February 2016 8. Assigned a consultant 9. Consultant submits report to IB 10. IB Site Team visit 11. Approval 12. Projected Approval Timeframe – Summer / Fall of 2016

9 Student Selection The MYP at Dickinson will be a selective enrollment magnet program Application Process – initially prospective students will be current fifth, sixth, and seventh graders We will use the Standard Application – as required Teacher Questionnaire Attendance Record (> 85%) Lottery

10 Logistics School-Within-a-School MYP Wing Bell Schedule Lunch Participation in high school programs 8 th graders in athletics Separate clubs and activities
