1 Chapter 5 Energy Resources

2 5.1 Notes Fossil Fuels energy resources - natural resources that we use for energy (wind/water/fossil fuels) fossil fuels - nonrenewable energy resources that are found in the Earth’s crust that come from dead plants and animals (can be a liquid, solid, or gas) liquid fossil fuels = petroleum (crude oil) solid fossil fuels = coal (used in a barbeque) – changed into heat gaseous fossil fuels = natural gas (stove, heater) – changed into heat (produces less pollution than coal)

3 5.1 Notes Fossil Fuels Problems with using fossil fuels for energy:
Pollution (air, land, & water) Increasing carbon dioxide in atmosphere, which is contributing to global warming acid precipitation – rain or snow that has a high acid content due to air pollution smog – a fog that exists when sunlight touches air pollution

4 5.2 Notes Fossil Fuels What can you do to help solve the problem of fossil fuels? (please be practical): Travel by bus Carpool Walk, ride a bike

5 5.3 Notes Alternative Resources
7 types of alternative resources that we use for energy: nuclear energy - energy that comes from the nuclei of an atom solar energy – energy from the sun (expensive), uses solar panels and solar cells wind energy – energy that comes from wind (windmills) hydroelectric energy – energy produced by falling water (water wheels, dams)

6 5.3 Notes Alternative Resources
5. biomass - dung that contains stored energy gasohol - alcohol and gasoline mixed together creates energy geothermal energy - energy produced by heat in the Earth’s crust

7 5.3 Notes Alternative Resources
Energy Resource Pro (Good) Con (Bad) solar energy (sun) no pollution renewable resource expensive nuclear energy runs power plants land pollution – radioactive waste Dangerous wind energy (wind mills) limited locations for wind farms hydroelectric energy (water mills, dams) inexpensive harms the environment when building dams limited locations
