New Unit: Water, Air, & Land Focus on human influences, use, & pollution Chapter 11: Water Chapter 12: Air Chapter 13: Atmosphere & Climate Change Chapter 15: Food & Agriculture
4
New Unit: Water, Air, & Land Key Questions: 1) Why are water, air, and land critical to human survival? 2) How does our way of life contribute to pollution and overuse of resources? 3) How have people and governing bodies worked toward conservation?

Water: Why is it important? http://www.unwater.org/water-cooperation-2013/water- cooperation/en/ http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/hungry_thirsty.h tml Water is a limited resource - Earth’s water consists of salt water and fresh water. - 71% of Earth’s surface is covered in water; 97% is salt water - 77% of Earth’s fresh water is frozen
7
The Water Cycle: Water molecules travel between earth’s surface and the atmosphere Evaporation: Water leaves behind salts/impurities and rises as water vapor Condensation: Water vapor condenses into liquid and forms clouds Precipitation: Water falls to the ground: enters surface water or groundwater
8
Surface Water: http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/animation_w atercycle_en.html http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/animation_w atercycle_en.html Surface water: fresh water on Earth’s surface Lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands River system:a network of streams that flow into larger rivers Provide drinking water, transportation, food Most major cities were built by surface water
9
Surface Water: Watershed: the area of land that is drained by a river Pollution anywhere in the watershed can affect the entire river system
