Demand for Responsible Government Many liberals wanted more power in the government. 1807: Wanted responsible governmnet – the Executive Council should be chosen from the majority party in the Legislative Assembly. 1830s: Wanted the Legislative Council to be elected, not appointed by Governor. GREAT BRITAIN SAYS NO!

Other Issues between LC and UC. Canals: Lower Canada pays to build canals, but won’t help to pay for canals to Upper Canada. Customs duties: In 1819 Lower Canada stopped sharing its customs duties (taxes from their ports) with UC. Subsidies: Legislative Assembly wanted to have more say in the Governor’s spending.

MOLSON TIME! UNITE! Some British colonists in LC, including John Molson, wanted to unite Upper and Lower Canada. Saw the Canadiens as troublemakers. This would give the English more power, because it would give them a bigger balance of the population. British Government refuses to unify the two Canadas. John Molson was an important businessman… Founded Molson brewery, elected to government, and was president of Canada’s first bank, the Bank of Montreal

Candiens to the Fight! PARTI TIME!!! 1826: The Parti Candien becomes the Parti Patriote… Spokespeople for the “Canadien Nation” Wanted more democratic power in politics. Intensified demands to British government. Became more radical.
