6
CHAPTER 2: AREA CONTROL
8
Preflight & Take- off Climb Cruise / En-route Descend Approach And Landing
9
CHAPTER 4:APPROACH CONTROL ~~ WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF THE APPROACH AREA??~~ Area over which landing and takeoff operations are made
11
Chapter 4 – Approach Control ~~WHAT IS THE APPROACH CONTROLLERS??~~ ~~The approach controller (APP) will guide the traffic through the Terminal Control Area (TMA). ~~
12
TMA is a two or more airports are clustered together with their control zones
13
Chapter 4 – Approach Control THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APP CONTROLLER 1. Important to know the different Standard Instrument Departure (SID) routes and the appropriate arrival procedures 2. Sequencing 3. To control the speed of the a/c
14
Chapter 4 – Approach Control THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APP CONTROLLER 1. It is important to know the different Standard Instrument Departure (SID) routes and the appropriate arrival procedures. ~~The Approach Controller is responsible for all aircraft within approximately 40nm of the airport, up to a specified upper limit~~
15
Chapter 4 – Approach Control 2. A task so-called sequencing. - Aircraft arrival procedures still need to be properly separated from each other and in the end only one could land at the time. So the distance on final approach between landing aircraft should be as such that the first landing aircraft has vacated the active runway before the next landing one can receive a landing clearance-
16
Chapter 4 – Approach Control 3. To control the speed of the a/c. -Aircraft in approach will gradually slow down towards the final landing speed. By allocating from the beginning allocated speed to the traffic, you can control the distance in between them much easier. Another advantage of slow speed is that their turns will be much shorter and easier. You could use this to let them turn either for separation but as well for gaining or losing distance between them.-
18
Chapter 4 – Approach Control ~~What is an Approach procedure?~~ ~~Is a series of predetermined maneuvers based on flight instruments. It normally starts at the initial approach fix (IAF) towards a point from where a landing can be completed. ~~
19
Chapter 4 – Approach Control APPROACH CONTROL PROSEDUR 1. Co-ordination 2. Transfer of communication 3. Weather Information 4. Information to aircraft
20
Chapter 4 – Approach Control ~~Co-ordination~~ 1. Aircraft approaching to land; if necessary requesting landing clearance arriving aircraft which are cleared to visual holding points 2. Aircraft routing through the traffic circuit.
21
Chapter 4 – Approach Control APPROACH CONTROL PROSEDUR 1. Co-ordination 2. Transfer of communication 3. Weather Information 4. Information to aircraft
22
Chapter 4 – Approach Control ~~Transfer of communication~~ Approach controller will establish the communication when the aircraft has become number one to land. For following aircraft, when they are established on final approach and have been provided with appropriate separation.
23
Chapter 4 – Approach Control APPROACH CONTROL PROSEDUR 1. Co-ordination 2. Transfer of communication 3. Weather Information 4. Information to aircraft
24
~~Weather Information~~ ~~The Approach Controller shall transmit the latest weather observations to aircraft on approach.~~
25
Chapter 4 – Approach Control APPROACH CONTROL PROCEDUR 1. Co-ordination 2. Transfer of communication 3. Weather Information 4. Information to aircraft
26
~~Information to aircraft~~ On the final approach the pilot is to be advised that he will be radar vectored to intercept the final approach : 1. Runway in use 2. Type of final approach 3. Procedure to be followed in the event of a radio comms fail if it is not published Aircraft receiving a surveillance radar approach shall be given: 1. angle of the descent path 2. radar termination range
28
Chapter 4 – Approach Control ~~What is a Standard Instrument Departure (SID) route?~~ ~~The Standard instrument Departure route is a (published) special route to be followed from departure towards the SID point.~~ Or in other word: ~~a published navigational chart showing the route an aircraft must take as it takes off and climbs away from an airport~~ E.G:SIDS chart
29
SIDs chart
30
Chapter 4 – Approach Control Information in the SIDS chart: A - Name of the facility and SID B – Frequency of communication C - Navigation aids D-Minimum altitudes, distance, courses E- Text description of the procedures and transitions
31
Chapter 4 – Approach Control ~~What the function of the SIDS??~~ 1. are designed to separate departing traffic from arrivals. 2. provide efficient interception of an outbound course 3. avoid noise sensitive areas 4. simply the issuance of departure clearances
32
Chapter 4 – Approach Control 2 type basics of SIDS 1. Pilot navigation ~~where the pilot is primarily responsible for navigation along the SID course 2. Vector SIDS ~~where ATC will provide radar vectors to an assigned route or fix
34
Chapter 4 – Approach Control What is the Standard Instrument Arrival Route(STAR)?~~ ~~A standard instrument arrival route or STAR usually covers the phase of a flight that lies between the top of descent from cruise or en-route flight and the final approach to a runway for landing.~~
36
Chapter 4 – Approach Control Holdings The main purpose of a holding: 1. To regulate the traffic flow in congested areas. In reality ATC will avoid holdings and only issue a holding instruction if its use is inevitable. 2. Has 3 types : Direct entry, parallel entry & offset entry
37
Q-bank Please state what the responsibility of the approach control? What is the function of the holding? What are understand between SIDS and STAR? Please explain 2 approach procedure you know.
