Concept Development To subtract means to take away. The answer to a subtraction problem is called the difference. To set up subtraction, line up the numbers by place value, with the greater number on top. Place Value Chart 1638 254 tens oneshundreds thousands Example: Mrs. Reyes’ class is collecting soda cans. So far, the class has collected 1,638 cans. Today, Mrs. Reyes sent 254 cans to the recycling plant. How many cans does the class have now? When we subtract 254 from 1,638 the difference is 1,384. The class now has 1,384 cans. 1 CFU Read the following real-life subtraction problem: Jill has 1,364 stamps. She sells 145 stamps. How many stamps does Jill have left?
