Libraries and Data Curation Services, the best thing since… UC3 Data Curation Workshop Trisha Cruse

Libraries, we have been here a long time Support the scholarly research process – Collect – Manage / Preserve – Provide access Abbey Library St. Gallen, Switzerland (photo from Curious Expeditions)

Libraries, we have been here long time Activities positioned around established publication process -- peer reviewed – scholarly articles – monographs

But wait, what about the explosion of… Computational science Data intensive research Social media Web technologies

By barryegan (Vitor Leite) http://www.flickr.com/photos/vixon/116447718/http://www.flickr.com/photos/vixon/116447718/ Which has produced DATA!

And that data has impacted society and scholarship

Data is just like crude. It’s valuable, but if unrefined it cannot really be used. It has to be changed into gas, plastic, chemicals, etc., to create a valuable entity that drives profitable activity; so must data be broken down, analyzed for it to have value. Michael Palmer 2006

Emerging issues Open data: movement to make publicly-funded research more transparent and available Broader critical review: greater interest evaluating original research data (Nature) Technological advances: sharing of research results easier and faster Reuse/preservation of research data: increased consideration of the cost/value of data and need to ensure its longevity

What keeps users up at night? What are “metadata”? Are there standards or best practices I should be aware of? How much will it cost? What is the ROI? Why should I care about preservation? I just need a place to put my data. Where can I get help? How can I share my work with my colleagues? How can I publish the data associated with my publications? How do I fulfill the data management requirements of my grant? How can I make sure I get credit ? Can’t my work be included in the Web of Science? How can I provide access to my work?

This is where libraries come in Our challenge apply library knowledge and expertise to data challenges: manage, organize, describe, disseminate, preserve information Our opportunity Neutral: work across the entire institution Strong in relationship building: experience fostering discussion and relationships Intellectual Property experts: has dealt with copyright, can translate to data Service-oriented: uniquely positioned as an intellectual service unit within the institution

What can libraries do? 1.Leadership and advocacy 2.Data management tools and support 3.Data management training 4.Data informatics expertise (metadata) 5.Storage and preservation 6.Policy guidance 7.Appraisal 8.Access 9.Impact Lyon, Liz. "The informatics transform: Re-engineering libraries for the data decade." International Journal of Digital Curation 7.1 (2012): 126-138.

How? Libraries as a neutral service entity can: Adopt a partnership approach Build coordination Facilitate service integration Ensure shared learning Lyon, Liz. "The informatics transform: Re-engineering libraries for the data decade." International Journal of Digital Curation 7.1 (2012): 126-138.

What we do over the next 2- days Examine data intensive research from a researcher’s perspective (Carly) Look at the research lifecycle (Joan) Investigate the entities on campuses that are involved with the research process (Perry) Step back and look at the challenges (all) Explore the available UC3 services (Carly, Joan, Perry, Adrian, Justin, Rosalie) Examine campus approaches(Angela, Noah, David, Tony, Jen)

What can libraries do?
