3 How do we measure stellar luminosities? And why do we care? Let’s say we want to find out how far away a star is… We can’t measure the distance directly But we can easily measure the brightness And brightness is related to distance and luminosity

112 Main-sequence stars are fusing hydrogen into helium in their cores, like the Sun. Luminous main- sequence stars are hot (blue). Less luminous ones are cooler (yellow or red).
