Transfiguration PREP Lesson Plan Date of Class: Teacher Names: Grade: 6 Chapter 6: The Liturgical Year Objectives: 1. Students will be able to explain that the liturgical year celebrates the important events in Jesus ’ life. 2. Students will be able to list and explain the 6 seasons of the liturgical year: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Triduum, Easter and Ordinary Time. Word of Week: Show video clip if available, or teach with resources provided. Gathering/Opening Prayer: 1. Gather students around prayer table. Pray together: Lord, you create all things to give you glory! (ppt.slide) We thank you for … respond with prayer after each prayer of thanksgiving. Pray grade level prayer; projected on wall Opening/Experience: 1. Show Seasons/Liturgical Year video 2. Ask students what is their favorite season or day of the year. Do a quick poll. How they show others that these days/seasons have special meaning?

Development/Presenting: 1. In the Church we have special days and times of the year that are important too. 2. We remember and celebrate these times in the Liturgy (ppt slide) Discuss definition. 3. Also includes Liturgy of the Hours (ppt slide) (A prayer, parts of which the Church prays at various times during the day and night – show Liturgy of Hours book … also online, ebreviary.com) 4. In the liturgy we remember and rejoice in Jesus ’ life – so we call the Church year … the liturgical year. (ppt slide) We remember Jesus ’ birth, younger years, public ministry, his suffering, death and resurrection and ascension into heaven. We also honor Mary, the Mother of God and all the Saints. 5. The entire liturgical year is constructed around Easter. Easter Sunday always follows the full moon after the spring equinox (equinox is the day the sun crosses the equator!) Connect to Resurrection of Christ, whose rising brings light to the world! Easter Sunday is always between march 27 and April 25. Using the calendar, when will Easter be in 2011? (April 24) When will Lent be in 2011? (March 7 – count back 6 weeks!) Discovery Activity: 1. Have students work in groups to create a podcast about the Liturgical Year. Divide into 7 groups, 2 students to work on intro and closing and 6 groups to explain the importance of the 6 seasons.) Summary/Response: 1. Play Jeopardy on computer to reinforce key concepts learned. Closing Prayer/Announcements:. 1. Close with prayer on page 84; projected on wall. Have symbols on prayer table: cr è che, Advent wreath, bowl of ashes, a cross, white candle, image of Jesus teaching. 2. Have students tear out Sharing Faith with my Family page, complete with their family and return to class next week. 5 returns = prize! 3. Remind students to have their families listen for their podcast! 4. Provide print out (half page of last slide in this PowerPoint Resources/Supplies Needed: internet, laptop, tv or lcd connections, power point, Seasons video, Jeopardy game, Sharing Faith with my Family page
