Creating Your Mission Statement for Work and Life
Inspired by Laurie Beth Jones “The Path” Alan Young M.A. Biola University/Thousand Oaks
2
Mission defined by Webster's:
A specific task, place of work, military operational task Aerospace operations An allotted or self-imposed duty or task A calling! Isaiah 30:21 KJV And you will hear a voice behind you, saying “This is the path. Walk ye in it.”
3
Elements of a good Mission Statement
Should be no longer than a single sentence long It should be easily understood by a twelve year old It should be recited by memory at gunpoint You no longer have to live in two boxes It’s one mission statement!
4
Top 10 False Assumptions My job or my role is my mission
My “To Do” list is my mission I am not currently living my mission I am not important enough to have a mission What I am doing now is as close as I can get to my real mission
5
Top 10 False Assumptions My mission has to be a grand one
A mission must be full of suffering My mission must be the same as those of my peers Geography is destiny Life is random, even I was an accident!
6
Finding your USP USP Defined: Your Unique Selling Point.
What makes you unique? Multi-tasking is of the “enemy” Where do you search for your USP? (Or your rudder?)
7
Where do you search for your USP?
What did you do for fun when you were a child? Ps 139:14 “You are fearfully and wonderfully made… and I know that full well.” What were your favorite toys/games? Do you remember anything that came particularly easy to you as a child? What did you tell people you were going to be when you grew up?
8
Where do you search for your USP?
Are you being or doing anything that resembles your dream now? If so what? And if not, why not? If you have not been listening to that still small voice inside… why is it still, and why is it small?
9
Looking at your gifts today
Why don’t we recognize our gifts? It is our responsibility to use and multiply them Be good stewards We must use our talents or lose them Matt 25:29 - the parable of the talents
10
Use our talents or lose them
People say, “Oh, you are so good at ____” Write down a list of no less than 20 talents you have been given and pretend you will be given a $1,000 bill for each Which talents have you buried or multiplied? Whom are you blaming for your talents being buried? Who is responsible for the development of our gifts?
11
Your Passion is Your POWER
Enthusiasm: from the Latin word “en” and “theos” - or “in God” What are you “in God” about? Why God made us
12
What are you “in God” about?
What excites you in or about the world? What angers you in or about the world? If you could teach three things to others about what excites you in the world, what would you teach? If you could convey to others three things about what angers you in the world, what would you convey?
13
What are you “in God” about?
How could you use what most excites you to affect or change what most angers you? List ten ways God does not waste anything
14
Time for your exercise….
My mission statement is to: __________, __________, _________ (Piece #1, your 3 action verbs) __________________________________________________ (Piece #2, your core value or values) to, for, or with…. ___________________________________________________ (Piece #3, the group/cause which most moves/excites you.)
15
Checking your Mission Statement
A good mission statement will be inspiring, exciting, clear, and engaging Large enough to be powerful and encompass a life time of activities Jesus had a mission statement: “to give life, and give it more abundantly”. You may get a dose of “creative tension”…
16
A Mission Statement for Work and Life
Before…. “to raise a happy family” After… “My mission is to create, nurture, and maintain an environment of growth, challenge, and unlimited potential for all those around me”
17
Unsuccessful or Inadequate Mission Statements
They are uninspiring Examples: using words like survive, exist, get by, to retire by the age of fifty-five They are for the benefit of one person or party only Examples: To conquer Europe, beat Nebraska, own a Mercedes, put our competition of out of business They are unintelligible by “outsiders” Too long! The are full of trite or ordinary phrases, i.e., “we are here to serve our customers.”
18
Closing prayer for you Colossians 1:9
We ask God to give you a complete understanding of what he wants to do in your lives, and we ask him to make you wise with spiritual wisdom. Then the way you live will honor and please the Lord. And you will continually do good, kind things for others. All the while, you will know God better and better.
