3 Era of John Ross Born October 3 rd, 1790. Ross had a tutor as a youth. He was a Political Apprentice from 1812-1827. John Ross was one eighth Cherokee but kept Indian ties and played Indian games. When he was a child he was eligible to participate in Cherokee events like the Green Corn Festival.

4 In 1817 he was elected to the National Council of the Cherokee Nation. Positions in Cherokee were – adjundant of the Cherokee Regiment elected senator to the National Council of the Cherokee Nation, severed as President of the Cherokee Senate, Assistant Chief and President of the Convention that adopted the Constitution for the Cherokee Nation, elected the Principal Chief of the Eastern Cherokee.

5 He was the only elected Chief of the Cherokee Nation. John Ross went to Washington D.C. and convinced President James Monroe to sign a treaty and a petition carrying 15,000 (90% of all Cherokee.) Andrew Jackson was mad at John Ross because of the treaty. From 1838 through 1839 the Cherokee (Ross’s tribe) marched from Rattlesnakes Springs to Oklahoma.

6 John Ross was the leader of the Cherokee for 40 years. Cherokee leader, John Ross went to Washington D.C. again to reason with President Andrew Jackson no success. 300 Cherokee secretly signed an agreement called the treaty of New Echota, it said to move west for four and a-half million dollars. He died August 1 st, 1866.
