Where are the Dead?
2
Current Theories Purgatory Reincarnation Humans become angels
Where’s the Scripture? No scripture, then NOT revealed by God! Reincarnation “…it is appointed unto men ONCE to die, but after this the judgment…” (Heb 9:27) Humans become angels
3
Only can answer this question by what is Revealed!
Can’t know by human reasoning Beyond physical and natural realm Can’t know by human experience We’ve never been there… Must use the word of God to find the Truth! Not Yet, Anyways!

Man is a composite Being
What is Man? “What is man, that thou are mindful of him? Or the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Heb 2:6) Man is a composite Being Body Spirit Eccl 12:7 “God formeth the spirit of man within him.” (Zechariah 12:1) “I, Daniel, was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body.” (Daniel 7:15) “God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen 2:7)
5
Best definition of Life and Death
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” (Eccl 12:7) Death – Separation of Body and Spirit Life – the union of the Body and Spirit “…the body without the spirit is dead.” (James 2:26)
6
Destination of the Body
Back to dust – Ground (Eccl 12:7) The body perishes “For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” (Gen 3:19)
7
Destination of the Body
“We know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Cor 5:1) Paul compares the fleshly body with a tabernacle or tent. Temporary Dwelling place
8
Destination of the Body
This body is only temporary It will perish It will decay It will grow old It’s corruptible! In asking “Where is the Dead”, we must ask “Where does our spirit go?”
9
Destination of the Spirit
Where it does NOT go: Grave Hence the separation of Body and Spirit Purgatory No Biblical proof Directly to Heaven or Hell Against Biblical teaching
10
Destination of the Spirit
Where Does it Go? (Luke ) “…Verily I say unto thee, to day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Christ promised the penitent thief that they would go to ‘PARADISE’. Christ said “TODAY”. (John 20:17) “Touch me not. I am NOT yet ascended to my Father.”
11
Destination of the Spirit
Christ said he was going to paradise. Christ did NOT go to his Father. The Father is in Heaven (Matt 6:9) Therefore Paradise and Heaven could NOT be one and the same place. Christ did not go to Heaven when he died.
12
Where Did Our Lord Go? (Acts 2:29-31) Two things we need to notice:
Lord’s body wouldn’t see corruption Soul would not be left in Hell (Hades) Hades – Greek word meaning “Unseen” When used in reference to death it means the realm of departed souls.
13
Where Did Our Lord Go? Jesus’ Soul went to Paradise at death
Jesus’ Soul went to Hades at death Therefore Paradise IS Hades! Christ went to the realm where disembodied souls await Resurrection. Christ’s Soul was not left in Hades he was Resurrected.
14
Destination of the Spirit
Jesus’ Body – Grave Jesus’ Spirit – Hades Our Body – Grave Our Spirit – Hades
15
Characteristics of the Hadean World
Rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31)
16
Consciousness of the Dead
“Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.” (Luke 16:25)
