7 Types of Questions Clarifying Questions  Simple questions of fact  Clarify the dilemma  Stay within the presenter’s dilemma  Brief, factual answers Probing Questions  Intended to help presenter think more deeply about an issue  Often will not have an immediate answer

8 In general, Probing Questions:  Are general and widely useful  Don’t place blame  Allow for multiple responses  Help create a paradigm shift  Empower the person with the dilemma to solve his/her own problem  Avoid “yes” or “no” responses  Are typically brief  Elicit a slow response (or no immediate response)  Move thinking from reaction to reflection  Encourage consideration of multiple party’s perspectives.

9 Probing Questions Exercise Step 1:Reflective Writing (5 minutes) Step 2:Write a concise statement of your dilemma on an index card (2 minutes) Step 3:One volunteer reads card Step 4:Group asks Clarifying Questions (2 minutes) Step 5:Group asks Probing Questions while volunteer writes the question on the back of the card but does not respond Step 6:Volunteer considers the questions and tells the group which ones provoked the most thought Step 7:Process repeats with new volunteer Step 8:Debrief
