1 WELCOME! LOOK AT OUR BW FOR WEDNESDAY:  Get a laptop  TURN IN SOURCE WKSHT IN THE BLUE BOX (40 form. pts.)  [5 min] Create a question that you will answer with a strong quote sandwich:  In your research, what information did you find to support your claim that __________________?  Example: what information did I find to support my claim that the Ku Klux Klan is a terrorist organization?

2 THE STEPS OF WRITING A BODY PARAGRAPH. (Step 1) Topic sentence (should connect to a point in your claim and go in the same order) (Step 2) Provide 1-2 sentences explaining the topic. (Step 3) Quote Sandwich to support what you said in step 2. (3-5 sentences)  Quote intro  Quote  Explanation (Step 4) Transition sentence to the next paragraph.

3 TOPIC SENTENCE: Abraham Lincoln’s “Emancipation Proclamation” is one of the most idolized pieces of literature in American history. QUOTE INTRO: However, a closer read of the document shows that this immortalized document is falsely viewed as the catalyst leading to the end of slavery. Mark Krug explains, QUOTE CITATION: “How did it happen that the nation, North and South, white and black, was convinced that the Proclamation was an important turning point in the history of the war? Slave states such as Kentucky and Missouri were left untouched by the words of the Proclamation” (98). QUOTE EXPLANATION: Krug defends the argument that the proclamation was not in fact a turning point in the war because it applied only to states that had withdrawn from the Union, leaving slavery virtually untouched in the loyal Border States. This notion is rarely discussed and rendered the document useless at the time of its implementation. TRANSITION: Furthermore, the Proclamation did not truly affect southern states.
