Goal: Equality Slides Digital camera images Prints Film Digital All compete on equal basis Proposal: Shift emphasis From a simple contest pitting image against image to emphasis on quality of each individual image Periodic rather than weekly winners Two things to consider: The principles of the proposal The logistics of making it happen It is still about winning...
2
Image evaluation – Grade each image: 4 - Rare, top of the line, take your breath away flawless image 3 - Excellent image with maybe one or two very small flaws 2 - Good picture but one that obviously could be improved 1 – Good album/memory image 0 – Out of category, disqualified Goal for Judging: Keep It Simple & Straightforward Avoid analytical dissecting of image
3
Three club members judge without collaboration Average the three scores Ratings: 4 image rated as 4 by all judges 3 average of 3.0 to 3.9 2 average of 2.0to 2.9 1 average of 1.0 to 1.9 Discussion of images lead by chair or selected moderator, not judges Everyone judges over the year If have image entered do not judge but use average of other two judges Some evenings, many evenings there will be no 4 rated images Some evenings there will be more than one 4 rated image
4
The Contest: Show slides, projected digital, and prints each night Member can enter one image per evening per category Compute a GPA for each member with a minimum of 18 entries required Photographer of the Year is the person is the one with the highest GPA Could also have recognition by calendar quarter and/or image type This allows my digital to compete on an equal basis against your slides
5
The change is that the recognition of your rare, top of the line image does not preclude the recognition of my showing a similar rare image on the same evening; Also it means that a good image shown against fair images does not earn the same points as a top of the line image This makes moot arguments relating to advantages gained over straight slides in digital post-processing This adds a true track meet flavor to the contests in that there are three levels of competition: A level about winning overall A level about being best in your group A level concerned with doing better
