Cross curricular STEM Initiative Brinsworth, Wingfield, Winterhill Jo Booler Winterhill School
2
Overall Aims To counter the perception of subject isolation To enhance learning by integrating key skills and concepts To improve understanding of STEM connections amongst staff
3
Objective To develop a number of exemplar projects that address some or all of the common weaknesses of STEM Projects.
4
CONTEXT Engineering & Manufacturing
5
The Past Dirty Low paid Dangerous Poor job security
6
Today Metals Textiles Plastics Environmental Chemical Electrical / Electronic ICT Mechanical

Made In Sheffield 70% of aircraft in the world contain parts made in Sheffield Leading sports engineering companies based in South Yorkshire More steel produced in South Yorkshire than during the Second World War Worlds leading medical engineering companies based in Sheffield 6000 engineers needed in South Yorkshire in next five years

What Do Employers Want? ‘ I don’t need button pressers or intellectual idiots but bright students who know which end of a soldering iron is which’ Adrian Allen – AMRC Boeing

STEM in Schools Context Traditionally the weakness of STEM initiatives can be that they ▫Are one off events ▫Target only a subset of students e.g. G&T ▫Are not integrated with curriculum delivery ▫Do not include representatives of all three curriculum areas (Science, Technology and Maths)
10
Therefore… Our projects should ▫Take place in ‘normal’ lesson time ▫Be accessible by all students ▫Include staff from DT, Maths and Science ▫Be limited in time – approximately 4 weeks ▫Be limited to a subset of the students, e.g. a single year group
11
Proposal Departments to identify keen, enthusiastic staff to lead on the project Choose a project e.g. baking muffins, rollercoaster construction, gadget design. Identify the skills and content relevant to the three subject areas (in most cases this will be existing curricula teaching). Adjust the order of delivery in their subject areas so pupils use the project context to cover the subject-specific learning
12
Task – Your Project In your school groups identify ▫A project ▫A year group/ classes ▫Time scale ▫Linking curriculum areas for each subject ▫Relevant staff ▫Other resources Outcome ▫A development line and action plan to form the first stage in delivering the project
