5 SUPPLIERS  Classify all controlled products  Supply proper labels and MSDS  Keep information on labels and MSDS current EMPLOYERS  Educate and train workers  Provide safe work procedures  Ensure availability of proper up-to-date labels and MSDS WORKERS  Understand content and significance of labels and MSDS  Follow safe work procedures  Notify employers about problems with labels and MSDS Key WHMIS Participants

6 Class A: Compressed Gases Class B: Flammable & Combustible Material Class C: Oxidizing Material Classification

7 Class D: 1. Materials Causing Immediate & Serious Toxic Effects Class D2: Materials Causing Other Serious Toxic Effects Class D3: Biohazardous Infectious Materials Classification

8 Class E: Corrosive Material Class F: Dangerously Reactive Material Classification

9  All WHMIS controlled products must be labelled  Labels alert workers to hazards and safe handling instructions  There are 2 types of WHMIS Labels  Supplier Labels  Workplace Labels WHMIS Labels

11 Workplace labels are applied to:  Secondary containers  Containers of products received in bulk  Employer-produced products  Containers with missing or illegible supplier labels Workplace Label

12 Contains the following:  Product name  Safe handling procedures  Reference to the MSDS Workplace Label

13 Provides detailed information about the product:  Hazardous ingredients and properties of the product  Proper handling, storage  Safe use of the product  Emergency procedures. It must be current (no more than 3 years old), complete, and readily available to workers Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

15 When working with controlled substances at work can you answer these questions?  What are the hazards of the product?  How do I protect myself?  What should I do in case of an emergency?  Where do I obtain more information? If you answer no to any of the information talk to your supervisor. Education and Training

16 Understand the product you are using (read and follow labels) Refer to MSDS sheets Use Safe Work Practices Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Talk to your Supervisor if you have questions. Protect Yourself!
