Intaglio MAIN MENU
11
Intaglio prints require the artist to carve or etch an image into a printing plate and press it onto a surface. Image from: http://artandpractice.blogspot.com/2013/04/arts-1301-chapter-23-printmaking.html http://artandpractice.blogspot.com/2013/04/arts-1301-chapter-23-printmaking.html MENU

Image from: http://www.duckprintfineart.com.au/techniques/ http://www.duckprintfineart.com.au/techniques/ Intaglio (etching, engraving, aquatint, etc.) is generally done using a metal plate such as zinc or copper. Your image needs to be thoroughly “scratched” into the plate. Line variations affect the darkness of shading and the sharpness of the print. MENU

Basic Supplies All images from: http://www.dickblick.com http://www.dickblick.com Etching Tools Preservative Chemicals Oil based Ink Plates for Etching **You will also need a barren if you do not have a press** MENU
14
Process The ink must be spread thoroughly (using a card or some form of straight edge) into the plate in order to get into the etching lines. You then take a cloth and wipe away the ink on the plate. This way only the ink in the lines will appear on the paper. It won’t catch the ink in the etched lines so don’t worry. When you reveal your print, you should see the etched markings from your plate on the paper. They will protect the plate etchings from fading due to age and use.** MENU

Have your stencil ready and place it underneath your screen and over your paper. Place a layer of ink on one end of the screen and use the squeegee to spread the ink down the length of your print. Lift the screen and reveal your print. MENU
