Time to Compose a Public Facing, Live, and Open Future Internet? Remembering the beginnings of – Internet2 – Wi-Fi Hot Spot They do something useful, public facing, and evolve Our two days are all about hard problems for Future Internet – We will solve them in time – Not what I want to talk about now Let’s take a moment to see what we have, and discuss how we can help the public glimpse into future – With what we have, doing something useful, across US, EU, and beyond – Get general public start talking, thinking, innovating about it FIRE-GENI Workshop September 20151
3
Ideas? We have done many things close … – GENI demos, Fire demos, GTS demo, SDX demos – Are these public, live, and open enough? Not really … these are testbeds – external interfaces are not provisioned as primary citizens External stakeholders – end users, end devices (IoT), public facing services not easily engaged – Some projects are trying to bridge this GENI Cinema CloudLab data transfer service (Clemson-Utah) over AL2S Internet2 IoT WG NITRD Operational SDN Workshop action item Others? FIRE-GENI Workshop September 20152

Proposing a Bootstrapping Effort Starting in US-EU A Cloud based approach Any and all cloud presence can be a SDX – Starting with CloudLab and GTS – Interfacing GENI stitched networks + AL2S + NSI – Allocating virtual or physical servers Prototype focus on compute/network/storage – go easy with the glue and automation – i.e., if aggregate manager or NSI agent not ready yet, manual out-of-band configuration is acceptable Deal with, not isolate from – organizational/administrative issues – External network interfacing issues Run interesting application prototypes on it – GENI Cinema, IOT grid, Smart City? What makes people feel “disruptively new”? FIRE-GENI Workshop September 20153
5
Long Term Automation – Canonical resource model and protocol Identity Federation Policy expression Correctness, robustness, assurance, virtualization Operation/business model All will be easier once we have a reference environment and set of participating stakeholders FIRE-GENI Workshop September 20154
