3 SS6H1 The student will describe the impact of European contact on Latin America. a. Describe the encounter and consequences of the conflict between the Spanish and the Aztecs and Incas and the roles of Cortes, Montezuma, Pizarro, and Atahualpa

4 To understand the impact that the Spanish Conquistadors such as Cortes and Pizarro had on the Aztec and Inca Empires

5 A conquistador is an explorer who settled in Americas in hopes of finding treasure.

6 Conquered the Aztec empire in Mexico in 1519-1521 Born in Medellin, Spain Parents hoped he would become a lawyer Nick name was ‘Killer’

7 In 1518 Cortes conquered Montezuma ( the Aztec empire). When he conquered Montezuma, he ordered to conquer all Aztec people. He had over 1,500 fighters, and over 1,000 of them were natives!

8 Cortes was able to kill Montezuma because of….. 1) Thousands of horses and guns 2) Secret information going back to his people 3) Smallpox and other diseases spreading

11 Cortes ended up dying in Seville, Spain in 1547!

13 FUN FACTS! Captured the Inca emperor Wanted lots of gold and silver Rose from poverty to great wealth Son of a Spanish soldier in the 1470’s

14 In 1532 Pizarro arrived in South America with 180 men to conquer the land and sail home with gold and silver. He captured the Inca emperor Atahualpa.

15 He had 180 men on his side. Smallpox was spreading. He convinced other tribes to join his side.

17 Pizarro was assassinated in 1514 when Diego de Almagro took him home and murdered him.

19 The Spanish conquistadors Cortes and Pizarro were wanting to spread their religion and language, were searching for gold and other treasures, and also wanted fame and glory. As a result, Aztec and Inca Empires fell.
