Receiver Designs for Unknown Fading Channels University of Toronto Fumihiro Hasegawa Dr. S. Pasupathy, Dr. K. N. Plataniotis

Multipath Fading Channel

Motivation Accurate information about the states of the fading channels are not available at receivers A receive filter matched to a shaping pulse is a suboptimal front end (FE) for fading channels

Objectives Separate known and unknown quantities from the unknown fading channel based on the channel autocorrelation Use FE to extract as much “known” information as possible from the unknown fading channel Joint channel estimation and sequence detection schemes are considered; “Estimate as you go”

Approximate Channel Model The fading channel may be approximated by M orthonormal eigenfunctions and Karhunen Loeve coefficients

Applications EDGE system, OFDM for frequency flat and frequency selective channels Space Time Trellis Code (STTC), Space Time Block Code (STBC) for spatially correlated multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel
