Renaissance Period: Time Span From: Approximately 1425 To: Approximately 1600 Renaissance: A French word for rebirth –Rebirth of philosophy, literature, art, music and theater William Shakespeare, Playwright Leonardo de Vinci, Art/Painter Nicolaus Copernicus, Scientist/Astronomer

Renaissance Period: The Music Church Music –Most music in this time period was written for church and religious ceremonies –1517: start of the Reformation period Catholic church splits New branch called Protestant led by Martin Luther –New music written in the language of where the church was unlike the Catholic music which remained in Latin

Renaissance Period: The Music Music as Entertainment –There was more freedom for music composers and musicians –Emphasis on lyrics that were poetic or was very meaningful –Music would convey emotions Polyphonic music was new and popular
