8 th Grade Science Do Now Monday, February 11, 2013 Tape “Do Now” for the week on page 47. Given this chemical formula: 6H 2 SO 4 1.Circle the coefficient 2.Put squares around the subscripts 3.List how many atoms there are of each element

8 th Grade Science Today’s Schedule 1. Do Now 2. Class Sort 3. Skittles Activity 4. Identify Parts of a Chemical Formula and Equation Essential Question How do we describe and classify matter? What happens to atoms in a chemical reaction? Vocabulary Chemical formula Chemical equation Subscripts Reactants Products Coefficients Chemical reaction Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Homework QUIZ next class! Homework QUIZ next class! Monday, February 11, 2013

8 th Grade Science Today we will… 8.5(F) recognize whether a chemical equation containing coefficients is balanced or not and how that relates to the law of conservation of mass Objective: Students will review identification of the number of elements and atoms in a chemical formula, and identifying if a molecule is a compound or not. Monday, February 11, 2013

8 th Grade Science Class Sort Each student has a card with a different element. The teacher will present the students with an equation and the students must “balance” the equation by going to the appropriate side of the room. Monday, February 11, 2013

8 th Grade Science Skittles Activity 1.Students will each get a packet Skittles. 2.Using the handout (RM 54 & 55), the students will arrange the Skittles to match the equation. 3.Students will then draw and color the Skittles on the handout. Monday, February 11, 2013 RED: Chlorine/Copper ORANGE: Sodium/Calcium YELLOW: Oxygen GREEN: Hydrogen VIOLENT: Flourine

8 th Grade Science Practice Students will complete RM 53 to practice identifying the parts of a chemical equation and what it means to have a “balance” equation. Monday, February 11, 2013

8 th Grade Science Do Now Tuesday, February 12, 2013 (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 1.How many atoms of Nitrogen? 2.How many atoms of Hydrogen? 3.How many atoms of Oxygen?
