Renovation and Infection Control
2
Construction activity n Type A:inspection, non-invasive n Type B:small scale, short duration, minimal dust- generating activities n Type C:activities that generate moderate to high levels of dust, require greater than one work shift to complete n Type D:activities that generate high levels of dust, major demolition and construction activities requiring consecutive work shifts to complete
3
Population risk group n Group 1:lowest risk ä office areas, unoccupied wards, public areas n Group 2:medium risk ä other patient care areas unless stated in Group 3 or 4, outpatient clinics (except oncology & surgery), admission/discharge units n Group 3:medium to high risk ä EM, labour, day surgery, laboratories, pediatrics, general wards (not listed in Group 4), etc n Group 4:highest risk ä ICU, OT, oncology units and outpatient clinics, transplant units, wards ad outpatient clinics for AIDS, dialysis units, endoscopy, cardiac catheterization and angiography areas

Matrix
5
Guidelines n Class I ä minimise dust production ä replace any displaced tiles ä maintain as dry an environment as possible ä report any water leaks
6
Guidelines n Class II ä prevent air-borne dust from dispersing ä use drop sheets to control dust ä seal windows and unused doors with duct tape ä water misting work surfaces while cutting ä seal air vents in construction/renovation area ä dust mat at entrance and exit of work site ä contain debris in covered containers or cover with moistened sheet before transporting for disposal
7
Guidelines n Class III ä maintain negative pressure within construction zone by using portable filtration in units or other methods ä ensure ventilation system is functioning properly and cleaned if contaminated by soil or dust after construction or renovation is over
8
Guidelines n Class IV ä construct anteroom –workers remove overalls each time they leave work site –change shoe covers –wet mop room daily
9
Conclusion n Costs associated with containment and monitoring requirements n Key to effective management of risk and cost ä early and thorough planning
