BIG IDEA Earth has 3 layers. Under the surface, rock is hot enough to become soft. When soft rock rises toward the surface, it can move the plates that make up the Earth’s outermost layer. When plates move, continents and oceans move, and earthquakes and volcanoes can form.

KEY CONCEPTS Crust- The outer layer of Earth that is made from several large pieces called tectonic plates.

KEY CONCEPTS Mantle- The middle layer of Earth. It is warm and about 60 miles below the crust.

HISTORY OF EARTH Earth forms ap-proximately 4.6 billion years ago in what has come to be known as the “big bang” theory.
