Abraham Maslow Developed hierarchy in 1954. Describes individual motivation and the human condition.

Survival Needs Base of pyramid must be established before proceeding to higher levels. Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Self-esteem. Individual cannot survive without meeting these needs. Long-term deprivation can cripple/lead to psychosis.

Personal Needs Mid-level tier of the pyramid relates to those of the individual. Need to know and understand others and one’s self. Aesthetic need relates to one’s purpose and the meaning of life.

Wisdom and Transcendence Upper tier of pyramid relates to fulfillment and realization of individual and others’ abilities as well as needs. Connection with something beyond the ego, and endurance beyond one’s own physical life.
