2. School Leaving Age  As from 1st January 2010 it has been compulsory that all students complete Yr 10 and until the age of 17… Remain at school or be registered for home schooling  OR Enrol in a Cert 2 TAFE course or higher  OR Undertake approved vocational training eg cadetship  OR Employed full time ie 26 hours a week.  OR Engage in a combination of work, education and/or training.

3. Some important terms  BOS Board of Studies: develops the course content and oversees the examinations and issuing of the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or Record of Student Achievement (RoSA)  ATAR: Australian Tertiary Admission Rank which is calculated by UAC (University Admission Centre).

4. Year 11 Credential  Recognition  Of  Student  Achievement  A grade from A to E based on school assessment.  (Like Year 10)

5. Year 12  Higher School Certificate  Awarded to all students who satisfactorily complete Year 12

6. HSC and ATAR HSC  is for all students  reports student achievement in terms of a standard achieved in individual courses  presents a profile of student achievement across a broad range of subjects ATAR is for students wishing to gain a place at a university is a rank NOT a mark provides information about how students perform overall in relation to other students provides the discrimination required by universities for the selection process

7. Types of Courses Board Developed Courses Have HSC exams (except for Life Skills) May contribute to the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) Include some VET courses Includes Life Skills courses Board Endorsed Courses includes Content Endorsed Courses No HSC exams – schools assessment used Count towards the HSC Cannot contribute to the ATAR Includes some VET courses

VET Curriculum Frameworks are:  Board Developed Courses  based on National Training Packages  provide dual accreditation  VET qualifications  HSC unit credit  access to ATAR pathway  optional exam & assessment requirements  have a mandatory work placement requirement  70 hours over the 240-hour/2-year course

10. TAFE courses  Mrs Martin (Careers Advisor) will talk more about TAFE options a little later.  Students may elect to do ONE TAFE course as part of the six subjects they choose.

11. TAFE Courses Yr 11 2016  At the moment TAFE funding for Year 11 2016 courses is being reviewed.  All students will select 6 subjects at Port Hacking HS.  Those who wish to do a TAFE course will express their interest.  If the TAFE course runs in Year 11 2016 then students will be allowed to enrol.

13.  In Year 11 students need to study 6 2 unit courses for a total of 12 units.  Some students will study more than 12 because they are doing Extension Maths and/or Extension English.

14.  In Year 12 the minimum number of units is 10.  This equates to 5 subjects.  Again, students can study 12 or more.

Both the Preliminary and HSC Courses must include: At least 6 units of Board Developed Courses, including at least 2 units of English (For the purpose of the HSC, CEC English Studies is included here.) At least 3 courses of 2 units value or greater At least 4 subjects (including English) At most, 6 units of courses in Science can count towards HSC eligibility These restrictions are coded into Edval.

16. Selecting Subjects  All students in year 10 will receive an email tomorrow morning.  They will need to go to their school portal and access their school email.  This email will give them a unique code to access Edval.

19.  Students have until 11pm on Monday 10 th August 2015 to complete this form.  They need to pick 6 2 unit subjects.  If a student wishes to study an Extension subject, this must be approved by the relevant Head Teacher.  They need to pick 5 reserve subjects.

20. Selecting subjects  If a student wishes to study a TAFE subject in 2016, there is room on the print out sheet to identify the TAFE subject.  Parents/ caregivers also need to sign the form.  Open High School  Students can study a subject (eg a Language) only with the Principal’s permission.

21. What are good reasons for choosing a subject.  You like to do it (which generally means that you are good at it).  You have an interest and ability in the subject.  For a future career – but do you know what you want to do?

22. What are the wrong reasons for choosing a subject.  All of your friends are doing it.  Your favourite teacher might be teaching it.  Choosing a subject to help create a class and then go to another subject so that your friends are happy.  Your parents want you to do it.  You want free periods.
