NSTX 5 year plan – J. Menard and M. Ono 4 Preparation for workshop will be more efficient if we: Agree early (today?) on overall format and perspectives to carry forward into workshop and chapters Understand and incorporate any needed coordination and planning with DIII-D and C-MOD prior to the Sept. meeting Have good outlines and most of the chapter text ready Incorporate information from the results review Other? To be discussed…

NSTX 5 year plan – J. Menard and M. Ono 5 Agenda: Discuss how to frame/coordinate NSTX research plans The purpose of this meeting is not to discuss physics details. Obtain guidance and discuss how to best prepare and present the NSTX 5-year plan during the workshop –Masa, Rich, Rob describe process thus far, and their perspectives Discuss possible needed coordination and planning with DIII-D and C-MOD prior to the September meeting. –Discuss possible role of BPO in this process – do we want this? Get brief update from lead authors on progress on writing chapters and preparation for workshop. –Get schedule of availability for writing from authors Any problems with getting drafts completed by early-mid August? –Authors should think about this before meeting Discuss near-term timeline and outlines for completing work for workshop and 5-year plan text

NSTX 5 year plan – J. Menard and M. Ono 6 Perspectives to include in plan chapters Importance of research to general toroidal plasma science Importance to burning plasma research = ITER –How ST research complements higher-A research Importance to ST-development = ST-CTF and NHTX –Startup and ramp-up, fully non-inductive steady-state, etc. Expect more emphasis on boundary physics in next 5 years –Important in its own right + NHTX relevance Make links to new diagnostic requirements/availability Emphasize implications of new facility capabilities: –Off-midplane RMP/RWM coils – ELM control, 3D edge, improved RWM control –Liquid lithium divertor – lower density, higher E, diagnostics, etc. –Sub-cooled TF and OH – Goal: 5.5kG, 1MA discharges for 2.5s –200-400kW ECH/EBW – more power (up to 1MW) if results are favorable –Second NBI box with larger R TAN injection (CD, TAE, diagnostics, etc) –Advanced fueling (pellets, CT injection) –Higher CHI voltage, plasma guns

NSTX 5 year plan – J. Menard and M. Ono 7 Some general guidelines for chapter writing Topical chapters of previous 5-yr plan were 30-35 pages –Aim for similar length for this 5 year plan See last plan for format/structure – but can we do better? Outline of topical chapters: –Overview of chapter – approx 1 page –Summarize recent results and new understanding, highlight diagnostics Focus on how results motivate new research in FY09-13 plan –State plans for each subtopic of your topical area – 1-2 pages Overall goal of subtopic research plan in 1 sentence Breakdown plan for subtopic in 1-2 year increments – physics, measurements, new capabilities, deliverables –Summary – 1 bullet/sentence for each subtopic –Graphical timeline of research plan – physics on top, tools on bottom Develop 8-12pg detailed outline of your chapter by July 11Develop 8-12pg detailed outline of your chapter by July 11
