FAFSA Question Changes 4 High School Completed New question Regulatory mandate Students who indicate they received a high school diploma will be asked to provide the name of the high school they attended Work-Study Revision to work-study and student loan question (Q31) Departmental guidance Students will be asked to indicate their interest in work- study only

FAFSA Deletions 5 Enrollment status question will be deleted TEACH grant question will be deleted

Untaxed IncomeText Changes 6 Other untaxed income not reported in items 44a through 44h, such as workers’ compensation, disability, etc. Also include first-time homebuyer tax credit from IRS Form 1040-line 67 and the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits received. Don’t include student aid, earned income….

Academic Competitiveness Grant and National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant 7 The ACG and SMART Grant programs do not have authorized funding beyond 2010-2011 ACG section within FOTW will no longer be presented to applicants

Parent PLUS Loan 8 In 2011-12, a student must file a FAFSA to receive a Parent PLUS loan 98% of students whose parents receive a PLUS loan already file, so not a significant change Intended to ensure that database matches are being conducted

2011-12 CPS Changes 9 Need Analysis Updated tables published in the Federal Register on May 27, 2010 Asset protection allowances will decrease due to variations in the underlying figures used in the calculation of the allowance Income threshold for Automatic Zero EFC increases to $31,000 EFC Formula Guide posted to IFAP on October 13, 2010

2011-12 CPS Changes 10 Modified Reject 1 for Web applicants New asset threshold question allows some parents and independent students to skip answering asset net worth questions Currently, CPS applies Reject 1 to applicants who are not SNT eligible and leave one or more asset questions blank In 2011-12, CPS will not set Reject 1 if asset questions were skipped because Asset threshold question was presented on the Web, and Applicant or parent answered “no” to the asset threshold question

2011-12 CPS Changes 11 Updated Reject 20 income values CPS rejects records when applicants and/or parents claim to be “non filers,” but report income above IRS filing requirements Values updated based on 2010 IRS adjustments Modified comment text/codes (156 and 157) to encourage applicants and parents to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool in FAFSA corrections if they said that they “will file” a tax return on their application

2011-12 ISIR Changes 12 ISIR layout posted in EDE Technical Reference on October 25, 2010 Incremented all date fields No changes to message classes ISIR record in flat-file format ISIR follows order of questions on the 2011-12 paper FAFSA FAFSA data elements added, deleted, or modified, as appropriate Exception: ACG data elements remain on ISIR, but will always be blank

Enhanced Functionality Help and Hints now have question labels and question numbers for easier reference. Formatting on date fields, telephone number, and financial fields. The system automatically saves the application at the end of each step. “Clear All Data” allows an applicant to delete their data from the system anytime prior to submission. 34

Financial Information The IRS Data Retrieval continues in 2011-2012 beginning January 30, 2011. Also available in Corrections Electronically filed tax return information will be available from the IRS in 1-2 weeks, data from paper tax returns will be available in 6-8 weeks. 45

IRS Data Retrieval Once the applicant has successfully authenticated, tax data will be presented and the applicant will have the option to “Transfer” the tax information to the FAFSA Transferred data will have a notation - “Transferred from the IRS” 46

Parents of dependent students and independent students will be presented with the asset net worth threshold question, if they are not eligible for auto-zero or simplified needs test; and if the student’s state of legal residence allows the applicant to skip the asset question. Asset Net Worth Threshold 49 If answer is “yes”, the three asset questions will display. If answer is “no”, the asset questions will not display, as we do not need to count the asset value in the calculation of the EFC.

Signature Enhancements A student and parent can enter their PIN and click “Sign” and the system will retain the signature. This allows parents and students to sign and submit separately. 51

Processed Successfully – Applicant Can Make Correction The student would be able to view the Electronic SAR or make corrections if needed. 54

Multiple Corrections When a student has multiple corrections they will be able to access a corrections history. We also will display information about the original submission and latest correction submission 56

“Submitted By” Values Latest correction field indicates who submitted the correction: Student, College or FSA System o “Student” displays if the correction was done by the student using FOTW, a SAR, or if student called customer service for a correction o “College” displays if correction was done by a FAA o “System” displays if the correction was generated by the CPS. 57

Correction History Correction History provides access to a summary of processed information for each of the student’s transactions. Student can opt correct a specific transaction from the history view. 58
