By the third century, Christianity was spreading throughout the Roman Empire. Christianity began among the followers of Jesus of Nazareth and gained acceptance throughout the empire. Who can recall what the terms B.C., and A.D. mean in regards to what we have learned in history so far this year? (Turn and talk)

After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the west, the Roman Catholic Church developed an organized government under the leadership if the Bishop of Rome who became known as the Pope. In the east, the Byzantine Empire developed its own form of worship known as the Eastern Orthodox Church

As a class, we will utilize Google maps on our Ipad to locate: Rome Jerusalem Constantinople Nazareth Upon locating all of these places, we will discuss what we notice about the geography of each area.

Independent Practice You will be given a timeline that begins at A.D. 1 and progresses until A.D. 600. The timeline will compare and contrast events regarding early Christianity and events going on in the world. You will have to choose an event from the timeline and write a 3-5-sentence paragraph explaining how the ancient Romans dealt with Christianity during that time.

Group Work You will be provided with a map titled “Spread of Christianity A.D 600” Each group will answer a different comprehension question based on the map. Group 1-Look at the map. Is Rome located northwest of southeast of Jerusalem? Group 2-What physical feature made it challenging for early Christians to expand their faith from Judaea to Britain? Group 3-How did the Mediterranean Sea make it easier for Christianity to spread? Group 4-What countries do you notice on the map that we have already studied this year?
