1 The county has a collaborative project called the Learning Achievement Coalition (LAC-O) focused on closing learning gaps and increasing achievement for all students. As part of LAC-O the Superintendents have established an accountability checklist for themselves to ensure focused attention is paid to closing learning gaps. 350 students participated in a student conference focus getting students involved in helping to close gaps in learning within the county The County Superintendent's have had two learning retreats focused on closing gaps in learning. 15 attended in 2010 and 18 attended in 2009. Oakland Schools has hosted a Best Practices Conference for the past Five Years highlighting excellent instructional practices from the 28 school districts. Attendance each year have been between 225-270 educators. 12 of the 28 school districts have formed African American Parent Networks that provide academic and social support to students of color. 2 $550,000 in grants received from United Way and MDE focused on closing the achievement gap already present at kindergarten entry. $330,000 in Title 1 grant dollars to help close gaps in learning in the highest priority schools as defined by MDE $250,000 Oakland Schools put specifically toward helping the highest priority schools in Oakland County as defined by Instructional Services staff.
