BICEP Beam Testing Site Survey Dowell, Chiang, Kovac, Nguyen 2004 May 7

Scenarios Antenna range/mesa (JPL) –West range 48 ft. tower, but expected to be busy. Best location is in the middle of the road –East range 40 ft. tower, appears to be much less busy. 140 ft. range. –183/233 parking lot (JPL) under gantry hoist Reflection problems? –Caltech campus near Lauritsen high bay No suitable site yet identified for locating source

East Range – Proposed Measurements Tower: 40 m distance, 16 degrees elevation –Polarized beam shape/cross polarization with Gunn oscillator –Unpolarized beam response with thermal source Tethered thermal source, ~200 m distance, ~45 degrees elevation –Unpolarized beam response Moon –Deep sidelobes for source truly in far field –Telescope tracking Jupiter –Beam shape for point source truly in far field –Telescope tracking

“Cons” for East Range Certainties: –Low elevation of sources on tower –Hot, dirty, sometimes windy, wildlife –Distance to lab, offices Uncertainties (need to check on these): –Availability, cost (Cable, Pogorzelski, Beckon, Pickett) –Availability of phone, Internet, air-conditioned desk space –Tolerance of heat by electronics

A Scenario Mount is parked in range lot. Maybe one-time move to approach tower. Cryostat shell: –Remains on mount? Need to access insert while on mount. Pump and other service in lot. –Removed/installed for each cooldown? Move to shed to work on it. Electronics for receiver outside total of ~1 month. Electronics for mount outside for as much as 1 month.

Hardware We Need to Obtain Steel plate for mount. Casters? Lift stand(s). Definitely to remove insert, maybe to remove cryostat. Canopy/“party tent” for telescope/electronics/people Tarp to cover telescope when not in use. Fixture to mount oscillator and blackbody on tower. Mast? Power lines, ethernet hub – coax or fiber only – at telescope. Phone line or cell phone. Shipping crate to move cryostat to/from mesa. Balloon/tether/source Electronic cameras Custom transfer lines Hoist in shed for cryostat work? Portable AC in shed? (Items in red are also needed at Pole)

Additional Hardware to Borrow Mobile crane to uncrate mount and set upright. Mobile crane to drop cryostat in? Forklift to move mount (twice?) Truck to drive cryostat to mesa
