Unit 2, Day 17

Agenda  Turn in Homework  Announcements  Catalyst  Washer Activity  Newton’s 1 st Law  Trust Fall Activity  Newton’s 2 nd Law  Break  Stand Up Activity  Newton’s 3 rd Law  Assign Homework

Turn in Homework  Please turn in the following:  Final draft of placard (20% of project grade)  Booklet with everyone’s pages (35% of project grade)

Announcements  Skateboard lockups start today  You can buy a lock for 5$ from the office  Unit 2 Exam:  Thursday 11/14 for even classes  Friday 11/15 for odd classes  Service Hours:  Come help clean the blacktop for 30 min after school! (half an hour of service)

Catalyst  Fill out the teamwork grade sheet  Include yourself  Note: not all groups may have 3 or 4 members  Keep in mind that I have been writing my own observations, so be honest with yourself. Blatant dishonesty about teamwork grades (for yourself or others) will result in your grade being severely docked

Washer Activity  Supplies:  One small jar  One playing card (DO NOT TAKE/LOSE THESE!)  One washer  Setup the supplies as follows:  Put the small jar down with the bottom on the table  Place the playing card flat over the jar to cover entire opening  Put the washer on the center of the playing card  Directions:  Quickly flick the card OR pull the card  Let everyone try a few times!

Notes  Newton’s First Law:  An object at rest stays at _________ and an object in motion stays in _________ with the same _________ and in the same _________ unless acted upon by an external _________ (a _________ or _________ )  “The Law of __________” Tendency for something to keep doing what it’s doing

Trust Fall Activity  Create groups of three  One person falls, one person catches, one person spots  Person falling should have arms out straight  Person catching should have arms ready to hook under  Person spotting should have arms under faller’s back entire time to help (just in case)  Switch so that each person catches the other two members!

Trust Fall Reflection  Describe what you think it would be like to catch someone who is:  4 years old:  12 years old:  An NFL football player:

Notes  Newton’s Second Law: Forces are a _______ or a ________ In every force there is an _____________ The ___________ increases as ___________ increases The ___________ decreases as ___________ increases =x

Notes  Units for force:  F = m * a  1 _______ = 1 ___ * ___

Break  7 Minutes  You are responsible for coming back on time  If complaints about noise level continue from other teachers, breaks will be discontinued

Notes  Practice for Newton’s Second Law MassAccelerationForceShow Work 2 kg10 N 3 kg21 N 4 kg18 N 5 kg6.2 m/s 2 - 2.5 m/s 2 - 10 N

Notes  Practice for Newton’s Second Law  Mass is the same on Earth and on the Moon  Weight is actually a __________ and requires __________  Gravity on Earth: ______  Gravity on Moon: ______

Notes  Practice for Newton’s Second Law  What is the force on someone with a mass of 60 kg on earth and on the moon? (Note: 4.4 N = 1 lb)  On Earth in Newtons?  On Earth in pounds?

Notes  Practice for Newton’s Second Law  What is the force on someone with a mass of 60 kg on earth and on the moon? (Note: 4.4 N = 1 lb)  On Moon in Newtons?  On Moon in pounds?

Stand Up Activity  Sit back to back with a partner and link arms together  Without unlinking arms (that means they should be firmly connected), try to stand up  When you are successful, join up with another pair and try again with in the group of four

Notes  Newton’s 3 rd Law  For every _________, there is an _________ and _________ _________.  Free Body Diagrams: depict the forces acting upon an object  Free Body Diagram for Earth and Moon EarthMoon

Homework  If you need to edit your painting or slingshot, please do so during office hours  Unit 2 Exam:  Thursday 11/14 for even classes  Friday 11/15 for odd classes  Service Hours:  Come help clean the blacktop for 30 min after school! (half an hour of service)
